Typhoon Wipha has made landfall on China’s eastern coast, slamming into the Zhejiang province late Tuesday, just south of Shanghai, and was churning toward the country’s financial district late Tuesday evening.
Nearly two million people were evacuated from coastal areas before the storm hit. Chinese emergency officials reported electricity and phone lines were knocked out in several villages and towns, and heavy flooding was reported on many roads.
Typhoon Wipha came ashore with 112 mph winds, and was forecast to be one of the most powerful storms to hit China in years.
Evacuations in advance of Wipha’s arrival included hundreds of workers from offshore oil rigs.
