A UK-based company has successfully developed the world’s first non-stick gum. Called “Revolymer” or “Clean Gum”, the newly developed gum by British scientists can be easily removed from your shoes, clothes, hair, and pavements. The company which was spun out of the University of Bristol says its preliminary non-sticky gum results also indicate that the gum will degrade naturally in water.
Its initial testing ground included trials on street pavement. In the company’s initial head to head two trials against known commercial gum brands, it found that the gums remained stuck to the pavements three out of four times.
Meanwhile, in total, Revolymer’s non-sticky gum was removed within 24 hours by natural events, according to the company’s tests results.
“The advantage of our Clean Gum is that it has a great taste, it is easy to remove and has the potential to be environmentally degradable.” says professor Terence Cosgrove, of the University of Bristol and Chief Scientific Officer of Revolymer.
“The basis of our technology is to add an amphiphilic polymer to a modified chewing gum formulation which alters the interfacial properties of the discarded gum cuds, making them less adhesive to most common surfaces.” Cosgrove explains.
The easily removed and degradable chewing gum is becoming a reality, the company says.
Revolymer hopes for the non-sticky gum is quite sticky, as it plans to take its consumer non-sticky gum to the next level, making it even easier to be removed from variety of surfaces. The Clean Gum will be launched into the consumer market in 2008.
