Tropical Storm Humberto quickly changed its outfit to a category one hurricane this morning. On Thursday at around 2 a.m. CDT, Hurricane Humberto made landfall along the Texas coast, east of High Island with maximum winds of 85 mph, dumping heavy rains, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Humberto is now moving toward southwestern Louisiana with sustained momentum, near 12 mph that is expected to continue over the next 24 hours, bringing the center of Humberto across central Louisiana today.
With its current maximum sustained winds nearing 80 mph as of 7 a.m. Thursday, Humberto is expected to pack higher gusts, confined to a very small area near the center.
Humberto is expected to weaken during the day today as it moves farther inland, says the National Hurricane Center.
The NHC says rainfall amounts could reach 5 to 15 inches across much of Louisiana and Mississippi, and the lower parts of southeastern Arkansas.
Meanwhile, NHC says that a hurricane warning remains in effect from east of High Island, Texas to Cameron, Louisiana. Also, a tropical storm warning remains in effect from east of Cameron to Intracoastal city Louisiana.
