Socialite-celebrity Paris Hilton is back behind bars in Los Angeles in what has amounted to a legal and media merry-go-round the past two days. The handling of her case is attracting a great deal of criticism amid complaints that she is getting special treatment because of her social status.
The latest troubles for the 26-year-old hotel heiress began Thursday, just three days after she began serving a jail sentence for violating probation in a reckless driving case. Citing an unspecified medical condition, Hilton was released from jail by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office, and placed under house-arrest for the remainder of her sentence.
On Friday, the judge who had sentenced Hilton in May and expressly ordered that she serve her time behind bars, sent her back to jail. Hilton reportedly screamed and cried as she was escorted from the courtroom. While no confirmation has been made of her medical problems, they have been reported to be psychological in nature.
Hilton’s case dates back to last September when she failed a sobriety test after a late-night traffic stop by police. She was sentenced to three years probation after pleading no contest. Within a few months, Hilton was pulled over again, while her license was still suspended, which resulted in the sentence she is currently serving.
Legal experts are predicting Hilton will be out of jail within 18 days, if not sooner.
