FON inked a partnership deal with Time Warner on Tuesday, which will allow Time Warner to offer its broadband subscribers a free unlimited access to FON’s Wi-Fi hotspots around the world, and through FON’s ISP partners. The partnership will also allow Time Warner broadband subscribers to join FON community members, and to create Wi-Fi access points via their home or business broadband connections for other subscribers to access.
FON’s Wi-Fi hotspot providers are FON’s community members (called Foneros) who share their unused bandwidth via a FON router in exchange for free Wi-Fi access when roaming through any other FON access point.
La Fonera router is secure out-of-the-box and offers two distinct Wi-Fi channels. One channel is for the exclusive use of its owner; the second channel is shared with other Foneros.
The La Fonera increases security through an encrypted private network and Foneros decide how much bandwidth to share. However, public users cannot access the private network and there is no anonymous usage.
“We are pleased to welcome Time Warner Cable subscribers to the global FON community,” said Joanna Rees, CEO of FON U.S. “Success for FON depends on extending Internet access to our user bases outside the home or office without requiring individuals to rely on costly and problematic remote access solutions.”
FON currently has more than 60,000 community members in the U.S. alone, the network is the largest Wi-Fi network in the United States. While, Time Warner Cable currently operates in 33 states, with 13.4 million basic cable subscribers and 6.6 million residential high-speed data subscribers.
The new partnership is expected increase Time Warner Cable offering to its subscribers, which will allow them to use the next generation of Wi-Fi devices such as Wi-Fi phones, game consoles and MP3 players, outside their homes.
